Da Aie Park is an artist whose work is deeply rooted in minimalism, exploring the dynamic interactions between liquid pigment and surface. Park’s practice is centered on the visceral reactions of pigments as they respond to the artist’s gestures and the environment. Using water-based pigments, he applies color to a variety of substrates—illustration board, canvas, and wooden panels—then manipulates the surface through actions such as shaking, tilting, and tilting, allowing the fluid pigments to move, pool, and create organic patterns that vary in intensity.
Through his gestural movements and the effects of climate and gravity, Park creates intricate, spontaneous effects, with colors shifting in response to the materials and external conditions. He often incorporates scraped areas and pigment-free spaces, allowing moments of resistance and absence to interact with the flowing colors.
Over time, Park’s exploration has shifted toward a more minimalistic approach, where the purity of color itself becomes the focal point. His intuitive process allows the colors to guide his actions, drawing out harmonies, contrasts, and juxtapositions. Recently, he has begun experimenting with contrasting panels placed together, creating color fields and dynamic compositions through the arrangement of distinct segments.
Color is Park’s primary motivation, both as a medium and a pictorial element, driving his exploration of mood, atmosphere, and sensory experience. His work captures the fleeting nature of color—whether calm, transient, or intense—transforming these intimate moments into spontaneous phenomena that evoke both quiet reflection and emotional resonance.
